Sometimes, the best-laid plans in San Francisco are no match for the city itself. In December 2025, a massive citywide power outage turned the lights off across nearly a third of the city, including the Civic Center. For our couple, who had their marriage appointment scheduled right in the middle of the blackout, it meant a cancelled ceremony and a very sudden change of plans. Not that it helped them, but here’s a guide we wrote on how to have San Francisco City Hall Wedding.
But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from years of documenting SF City Hall Wedding Pictures, it’s that this building is worth the wait. They pivoted, handled the chaos with total grace, and came back a week later specifically for a portrait session. Honestly? It was probably for the best. Without the pressure of a scheduled appointment time, we had the freedom to just wander and lean into the architecture.

We’ve been shooting at City Hall for years, and we’ve seen it all—protests, film crews, and now, citywide blackouts. That experience is exactly what you need when things go sideways. We know exactly how the light hits the 4th-floor gallery at 10:00 AM versus 3:00 PM, and we know which marble hallways stay quiet even on the busiest Fridays.
For this session, our experience meant we didn’t have to stress about the crowds or the rescheduling. We knew exactly how to navigate the building to make it feel like they had the entire Beaux-Arts masterpiece to themselves. Even though it was storming heavily outside, this remains a great place to take photos during a thunderstorm.

A power outage in the middle of your wedding week is definitely a story for the grandkids. But standing there a week later, with the lights back on and the rotunda glowing, it felt like the building was putting on a show just for them. It’s a reminder that while you can’t control the city’s power grid, you can always control how you react to it.
We’re just glad we were there to capture the “Part Two” of their wedding story—the one where everything finally went right.
