For this session, we had one of those rare, perfect California days—bright sun, but with enough of a breeze to keep the air feeling crisp. Our couple leaned into the refined vibe of the estate by wearing soft, classic neutrals for their Filoli Gardens Engagement Photos. It was an intentional choice that really paid off; by keeping their palette simple, they let the vibrant energy of the gardens do all the talking.
The Grounds in Bloom
Filoli is famous for its seasonal rotations, and it never seems to have an “off” day. The vibrant colors of the flower beds against the weathered brick of the house create this incredible natural contrast. We spent most of the afternoon wandering the 16 acres of formal gardens, finding quiet pockets between the yew hedges and the reflecting pools.
The light was hitting the brickwork in that warm, golden way that makes everything look a bit like a painting. It’s a dream for a photographer because the symmetry of the architecture gives you these perfect leading lines, while the lushness of the plants keeps it from feeling too stiff. We absolutely adore shooting here and it’s always a top recommendation to our couples who want a garden engagement session.
The Neutral Palette Advantage
We’re big fans of neutrals for a location this lush. When you’re surrounded by bright greens and pops of floral color, wearing beige, cream, or soft grey keeps the focus exactly where it should be—on the connection between the two of you. It felt timeless, sophisticated, and very much in line with the “less is more” philosophy we love.
A Note on the Experience
One of the best things about shooting at Filoli is how sprawling it is. Even on a sunny day when the public is out enjoying the trails, you can almost always find a secluded corner to yourself. Whether it’s the sunken garden or the fruit orchards, there’s enough space to just breathe and be present.
It wasn’t a “produced” shoot; it was just a slow walk through a beautiful place, documenting a couple who looked entirely at home in each other’s orbit. We hope you love this session as much as we loved documenting it!
